Family Lives Worth Living

CI 5900–Special Topics in Family, Youth, and Community, (Sec. 5, 3 cr.), July 10-27, 2007

What does it take to establish and maintain a rich, mutually supportive, resilient family life in the 21st century? Students and instructors will meet daily July 10 through 27 on the prairie of southwest Minnesota to explore the ingredients of successful family life. We will build on our experiences of family life by sharing stories about family traditions and relationships, and by living out social qualities of cooperation, mutual respect, conflict resolution, and openness to the world outside the intimate circle. By intentionally creating an artificial, temporary family and reflectingon its dynamics, our experience in the course-community will help us to supplement our own intuitions and theoretical understandings of family life.
